Intrathecal Pain Pump Therapy in Atlanta, Marietta, and Fayetteville, GA
Intrathecal Pain Pump Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that delivers medication directly to the spinal cord to control severe or chronic pain. At Regenerative Spine & Pain Specialists, we refer out for this procedure. We do not perform it.
Our clinics in Atlanta, Marietta, and Fayetteville, GA, specialize in interventional pain procedures that provide precise, long-term relief and improve quality of life for patients living with complex pain conditions.
Trial Phase: A temporary catheter is placed to test how well intrathecal medication relieves pain.
Implantation: If successful, a small pump and catheter are implanted under the skin—usually in the abdomen—with the catheter running to the intrathecal space near the spine.
Programming: The pump is programmed to release precise doses of medication at set intervals.
Follow-Up and Refills: Medication levels are monitored and refilled periodically through a simple office visit.
Infection at the pump or catheter site
Bleeding or fluid leak around the spinal cord
Catheter displacement or blockage
Medication side effects such as drowsiness or nausea
Pump malfunction
In rare cases, spinal headache or nerve irritation
If adequate pain relief is not achieved, your provider may:
Adjust medication dosage or type within the pump
Reposition or replace the catheter or device
Recommend alternative interventional procedures or neuromodulation therapies
Most patients go home the same day or after a short observation period. Recovery is typically quick, with mild soreness at the incision site for a few days. Patients are advised to limit bending, twisting, or lifting for several weeks and attend follow-up visits to monitor healing and pump performance.
