What Are Nerve Blocks?
Nerve blocks (or neural blockades) involve injecting medication near a specific nerve or nerve group to “block” pain signals from reaching the brain. The injected medicine typically includes a local anesthetic, sometimes combined with a steroid to reduce inflammation.
Back pain can stem from various causes, including injury, poor posture, trauma, or spine diseases. At Regenerative Spine & Pain Specialists, we understand the complexities of back pain and provide a thorough evaluation to identify the root cause. A back injury doctor from our team will review your medical history and conduct comprehensive physical and neurological examinations, often supplemented by imaging studies, to pinpoint the exact source of your discomfort.
The skin is numbed with a local anesthetic.
Using ultrasound, CT, or fluoroscopy, the physician guides a thin needle near the targeted nerve.
A small amount of contrast dye may be used to confirm placement.
The medication is injected to block pain signal transmission.
Low-level electrical stimulation may also be used to help locate the affected nerve.
The effects of a nerve block can last from hours to several months, depending on the type used. Some are temporary for acute pain, while others provide long-term relief with repeat injections. Your provider will recommend the most appropriate type based on your diagnosis and goals.
